About "Evans Tries an O-Level" :
James Roderick Evans was a kleptomaniac and was captivated in Oxford Prison. He was called "Evans the break" since he tried to get out of jail a lot of times. He attended German classes in jail and requested a chance to write the O-level German exam.
The Governor of Oxford prison called up the Secretary of examination board and the secretary agreed to conduct the examination at the jail itself. At 8.30pm on Monday June 7, he ended his German classes.
Jackson was a senior prison officer in the D Wing and wasn't friendly with Evans. Officer Stephen was newly recruited. Evans was told to shave his beard and smarten up before the exam. He insisted on keeping his red-and-white bobble hat since he believed it was a lucky charm.
Governor wanted Jackson to make sure there was no way of escape for Evans and also that there should be no potential weapons in his possession. Reverent Stuart Mcleery, the invigilator, left at 8.15am with a brown suitcase with Sealed question paper, yellow invigilator form, authentication card, a Bible and a copy of "Church Times".
Officer Stephen kept an eye on Evans through a peephole in the cell. The exam was supposed to start at 9.15am but started at 9.25am. At 9.40, the Assistant secretary called the Governor for passing a correction slip. He explained the correction slip to Evans and
Mcleery. The Governor listened to the talks inside the cell. The index number was 313 amd center number was 271. At 10.50 am, Evans requested for a blanket. At 11.20am, Mcleery announced that there was just 5 min for the exam to end. At 11.25am, Stephen accompanied Mcleery to the main prison gates.
He noticed Mcleery being a little slimmer. He went back to check on Evans and was shocked to see "Mcleery" (Evans dressed up as Mcleery) lie there all bloody and messed up. He thought
Evans disguised as Mcleery and escaped Prison. Meanwhile, Detective superintendent Carter came."Mcleery" told him that he knew where Evans went since Evans had his plan cleverly superimposed on the last blank page of question paper.
Carter sent Mcleery in an Ambulance and found out that Evans must be at Newbury. He sent Jackson and Stephen to St. Aldates Police station and ask for Chief Inspector Bell. Governor called Carter and asked if he got "Mcleery" to the hospital. He said "Mcleery" is in Radcliff. He called Radcliff but was unable to find him there.
After that, they found the real Mcleery bound and gagged in his study right from 8.15am. It was not Evans disguised as Mcleery who went out but Evans as Mcleery who stayed in. Evans went to "Golden Lion" in the middle of Chipping Norton. He noticed the receptionist had changed. Meanwhile, Governor noticed 313 and 271 and combined them to find 313/271 which according to the Ordinance survey map of OXfordshire, landed him at Golden Lion.
Evans opened his room and saw Governor. He told him all about his escape plans and surrenders. While going back, he was admitted in a separate vehicle which drove him to his escape as the driver was his friend. (The story says he goes to Newbury. I'm not sure)
