For a equation to represent a wave,
y ( x,t ) = f (ax bt )
at t = 0 , y = 1/1+x2
at t = 2 , y = 1/1+(x-1)2
the wave is of the form : y = a/[ b + (x-vt)2 ]
So if you compare the equations ,
we get v t = 1 , so t = 2, hence velocity = 0.5 m/s in +ve
direction
I was myself confused with this thing till i finally got this
general term in Arihant obj physics book.
Check the attached file you will see that the pulse moves
in the positive direction.

All that is gold does not glitter
Not all who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost.
From ashes a fire shall be woken
From shadows a light shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that's broken
The crown less again shall be king. |
