always use common normal in these typa questions ..shortest distance always is along the common normal..
normal of parabola.. y= mx - 2am -am^3.. now for it to be normal of circle as well .. thus. 12 = m(0) - 2m -m^3.. solve for m.. m=-2.. now u have equation of line.. get the intersection point on parabola..(u get two)..eliminate one by general plotting of diagram..
now just find the distance of tht pt. frm centre of circle and then minus radius frm it.. u get the shortest distance..
