see i never said my method is the rule of the day , it can b applied anywhere..
there are instances were the method i stated bcoms tugh 2  apply
anyway here,
See waterdemon's post for the forces on M  and m.
Consider Tension force..
 T force on m=2T one due to the string at the bottom and the other due to the string attached 2 the pulley at the top, wich in turn is attached to M
and Tension acting on m =T
T.xm +2TxM=0
on differentiating,
so am=2aM
