\mbox{I think the question should have been as follows} \\ \\ a+b+c+d = 8 \ , abcd = 16 \ ,a+b=? \\ \\ \mbox{Now} \ \frac{a+b+c+d}{4} >= (abcd)^\frac{1}{4} \\ \\ \mbox{Here equality occurs....thus the numbers should be equal} \\ \\ a=b=c=d=2 \ \Longrightarrow a+b = 4
