When the no of +ve charges entering the anodic half cell increases, the electrons can't enter the circuit.The electrons are pulled back by the positive charges and repelled by the -ve charges.Then cell voltage becomes zero.
To prevent this we use salt bridge!!! Therefore, it's not essential but only used to enhance the life of the cell.
