carbene is carbon with only its two electrons of the four involved in bonding.. so it is divalent.......it may have sp2 or sp bonding.....
they are of two types.......singlet and triplet.
the triplet has its two electrons with parrallel spins in two orbitals..linear shape the singlett..... has them in one orbital only...hence having bent shape
