Mn+ ---> 3d 5 4s1 now when CO is present, effective configuration = 3d 6 4s 0
So 3 lone pairs for back bonding with vacant orbital of C in CO
Fe ---> 3d6 4s2 in presence of CO , eff config = 3d 8 i,e 4 lone pairs for back bonding
Cr ----> 3d5 4s1 effective config = 3d 6
so 3 lone pairs for back bonding
V - ---> 3d 4 4s2 so eff. config = 3d 6 ; again 3 lone pairs for back bonding
Thus max back bonding in Fe(CO)5.
So CO bond order lowest.

From J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings':
All that is gold does not glitter
Not all who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost.
From ashes a fire shall be woken
From shadows a light shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that's broken
The crown less again shall be king. |
