let V be the volume of water before the ice is placed in it Vtotal [ initial] = V + Vimmeresed now Vimmersed = V*x/y = M/x*[x/y] = M/y M - total mass of ice now Vtotal[final] = V + volume added by the melted ice + Vimmersed Vimmersed = [M - m]/ x *x/y = M-m / y volume added by melted ice = m/x so Vtotal[final] = V + m/x+ [M-m]/y change in volume Vchange = Vtotal[final] - Vtotal[initial] = m/x + M/y -m/y -M/y V cancels out = m/x -m/y solving we get Vchange = m ( y-x)/ xy
