The “Science” Behind Time Travel

IN TIMESHIFT, TIME TRAVEL IS A EUPHEMISM for what is really nothing more than time viewing.

To create a world where time viewing is possible, Timeshift imagines a new physics. Alpha Light—the spectrum ranging from infrared to ultraviolet—splits off and continues on into space. But it leaves behind Beta Light, a hitherto unknown companion particle to Alpha Light that has a small, almost imperceptible mass. Beta Light is trapped in a sediment–like swirl by the earth's magnetic field.

Because of its unique properties, Beta Light acts like a recording film capturing the images of the past exactly as they happened—sights, sounds, everything just as it was. Man can view the past, but not interact with it. 

The Time Viewing Process

TO BEGIN TIME VIEWING, a vortex to the images of the past is opened. By demolecularizing their bodies and inserting themselves into the proper Beta Light layers, man can recapture the exact sights and sounds of the past.

Occasionally, though, power will unexpectedly surge during a time viewing “jump”. When this happens the jumper feels disoriented and believes that the images of the past are actually reacting to his presence. The power surge blots out the Beta Light layer (like removing segments of film from a motion picture reel), so the event can never be visited again.

Entering And Changing The Past

SOME THEORISTS SUGGEST that what is being created is an “interactive breach in time”, where the past can actually be entered and changed. Instead of aborting the jump during a power surge, they advocate increasing power to push the jumper through. If correct, the jumper will enter “real time past”, and become a living part of history.

Although ridiculed by their peers for believing such foolishness, by the end of Timeshift we find that these theorists are correct—but in ways none of them could imagine. The consequences of this are explored in detail in the two sequels to Timeshift, Between Two Worlds and What Price Paradise? 

The Problem With “Real Time Travel”

ENTERING THE PAST CREATES a whole new series of problems. As long as a vortex to the past is open, the past has not changed, and the two realities exist side–by–side. However, when an open vortex is closed, history will change instantly from that point to the future.

A person who enters a time before they were born does not technically exist in that time period. Nature abhors a vacuum, and to compensate for this inequity the time traveler begins undergoing a “living fossilization process”. Molecule–by–molecule the atoms in his body are replaced with elements of that time. Although the time traveler does not physically change appearance, as his molecules are replaced he is literally reborn into that period of time. Also, he begins to lose his memory of the future (his “past”), which has not yet occurred. The longer he is in real time past, the more his memory of the future fades. 

Removing The Time Travel Paradox

THERE IS ANOTHER, EVEN MORE serious consequence. If the time traveler dies before returning to the future, he will not be reborn again at some later date (and begin the process all over again.) He has lived and died in the past in his own right as a member of that time period. The future, therefore, will be changed, along with whatever actions of his have changed the past.

As the vortex to the future closes—and the time traveler remains behind—he is lost there forever. Since he no longer exists in the future, all memory of him in the future is lost also. Everything he did, or said, or influenced in the future must now be done, or said, or influenced by someone else, or it will not have happened (or not have happened in the same way).
