You can now demand to know exactly how the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Board — the body that conducts the entrance test for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) — reaches the cut-off marks for admission.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) — the apex body that protects and guarantees a citizen’s Right to Information — has told the JEE Board to reveal the formula and procedure it uses to arrive at the cut-off marks for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the exam. The Board must also provide information on the number of students, subject-wise, who have made the cut-off mark.

The Board is not, however, obliged to reveal information pertaining specifically to an individual, or a set of candidates.

The IITs have been refusing requests of students seeking information on JEE results under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Information Commissioner O.P. Kejriwal issued the order on an appeal filed by Professor Rajiv Kumar of IIT, Kharagpur, who had earlier put in three RTI applications seeking the entire list of successful candidates at JEE 2006, and the formula and procedure used for arriving at the cut-off marks.
