NITs allocate 50% of the seats of its resp state students on the basis of state ranks. Otherwise, every state has a quota for its in students in an another state nit which will depend on ur state rank again. In fact, state rank is mainly the important thing.







But they hv put up national ranks in the site as its easier. U cant put opening rank state rank 28 (TamilNadu) closing rank state rank 1200 (West bengal). See ? U cant classify like tht. So they hv put up national ranks which u can conviniently forget unless u r aiming for IIITs which reqs < 2000 All India Rank.
