Yes it is an interesting stream and it doesn't presuppose an abiding interest in chemistry. If you are interested in mechanics of fluids, thermodynamics, reaction rates kind of stuffs then this is the best option for you. As far as placements are concerned chemical engineers are paid highly and it has good research prospects if you want to study further.
