Dear Sir,
It is a delight to see your vision for your son towards IIT and its preparation therein. I cleared my IIT JEE in 1997 along with other important entrance examinations with good ranks in all of them.

The key to IIT is clarity of concepts and the sharpness of the student in terms of solving a particular problem.

What is important to cultivate is a vision for any given concept or problem. The student must be able to visualize and appreciate the underlying beauty, simplicity, and symmetry of mathematical derivations of formulae. He/she should know definitions of fundamental entities like mass, weight, mole, molar heat, electric potential, etc., which are only a few to name. Once the child knows what defines a fundamental quantity or concept, and grows by virtue of self reading and self problem-solving, then I think he/she is on the right track.

My advice to you is to let your son grow his skill in science/maths as well as English and other subjects at his level. Give him a vision of IIT and what it takes to get there. The desire to get in there should start coming from within himself and once he knows what he wants, course materials and other things will start making more and more sense after class X.

Let me remind you that Xth Board examinations are very very important because this is the first big platform where you prove yourself and instill confidence for any entrance preparation to follow.

Let's come to the point regarding books and material that you have emphasized upon. Precure NCERT books for class VIII and maybe class IX at the present moment. But motivate him to try the problems unceasingly until he has given his best shot to solve them, even if it involves trying several times. The confidence it instills in a student is remarkable.

I wish you all the luck and hard work (parents can make a lot of difference at home by creating a conducive environment for study and games hand in hand).
Once your son starts appreciating science and scientific principles, he is sure to make his way to the top shot institutes of the country.

Please revert if you want to discuss more, maybe as a separate query.

All the Best.
