Mixture of HCl and ZnCl2 is known as Lucas Reagent.
Lucas test is used to detect the type of alcohol i.e. is it primary, secondary or tertiary.
Tertiary alcohols react most easily with Lucas reagent, followed by secondary and primary.
So after adding the sample of alcohol and Lucas reagent in the flask and shaking it, if you see oily drops within few time., the sample of alcohol is tertiary. If the solution turns milky, then the alcohol is secondary. If it does not react, it is primary.
The reason for this is the high stability of the transition state in case of teriary alcohols. And always remember, more stable the transition state, more easy is the reaction to occur.
Hope this helps...
