you see in aldol two the anion of a aldehye attacks on another molecule of same aldehyde. but in cross aldo the anion of an alde hyde attacks on another aldehye. for e.g. HCHO + CH3CHO---NaOH----> i)OH- can't extract alpha H+ from HCHO since it doesn't have,so it will take H+ from CH3CHO and forms anion CH2(-)CHO. ii)this CH2(-)CHO has two chances:- a) attacks on HCHO:- when it attacks on HCHO this will be a cross aldol product HCHO + CH2(-)CHO ------> CH2(OH)CH2CHO b) it can attack on another molecule of CH3CHO this will be a self aldol product:- CH3CHO + CH2(-)CHO -----> CH3-CH(OH)-CH2CHO Is it ok if something is wrong please tell me |
