Dear Srini.......we may say that Na being an alkali metal is incapable of forming covalent bonds with C but is capable of forming ionic bond with the halogen group as per the Wurtz reaction..........Mg being an alkaline earth metal n a complete s-subshell in its outermost orbit can form covalent bonds with C......thus more than its ability to form magnesium halogens.........it is found capable of forming Grignard Reagents..........this is just an outline of the thing........if anyone can explain better........i would welcome the person........what i feel is that this must be correct n sufficient too
