see here frend ,
a base can NEVER catalyze a reaction like esterification which involves an acid ( carboxylic acid )
on the other hand HYDROLYSIS of an ester can take place in acidic or basic medium both . the order of the reaction is different in both cases .
i hope u understand the point .
and as far esterfication machanism is concerned , see there is no fixed machanism or path by which esterification takes place . it al depends on the nature of products , steric hindrance n other factors . try and looking up at as many solved examples as u can to get my point .
