Circuit board Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross section of a multilayered circuit board which is still under construction. Initially the conductive material completely covers both surfaces but is then selectively removed during the process to create the circuit. The holes in the top serve as connections for other components. A thick insulating layer (in green) reinforced with fiberglass makes up much of the board. Printed circuit boards are wafer-thin, flexible and used in most electronic devices. Magnification: 36 X.
Velcro Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of nylon hooks and loops in Velcro material. Used as a common fastener on clothes and shoes, Velcro is a nylon material formed into two different structures: one a nail- head-like surface, and the other a smooth surface made up of a series of loops. The loops are loosely woven strands among an otherwise tight weave. When the two surfaces are brought together they form a strong bond, but can still be pulled apart. Magnification: 50 X.
