Dear Its manly applied to two body problem say for example earth moon system both of them are orbiting around their center of mass you can solve this two body problem as one body revolving around other stationary body with unknown radius (that you may want two know from solving ) the mass of the virtual revolving body will be
=m1m2/m1+m2
you can also apply reduced mass concept in case of two mass connected by a spring (both movable say you need to find its frequency ) you can fix one mass and at the other end you can substitute other mass by virtual block of reduced mass mass but the force constant will be different
