dear During the collisions the impulsive force that arises at the collision point has zero torque about the COM of the rod hence angular momentum must conserve about the COM of the rod . So we can write down the equations of conservation of angular momentum about the COM of the rod Since before the collision the the object was moving perpendicularly tp the rod and the rod was at rest total angular momentum pd the whole system must be due thye moving object only about the COM which will be m1vL/2 L= length of the rod after collision It may stick to it which will required the Moment of inertia of the rod to be changed ( Moment of Inertia must be calculated about the COM since we are applying conservation of momentum about the COM ) m1L^2/3 + mL^2 m1 = mass of the rod , and m= mass of the object
Go through few solved examples to understand these concepts in action
