International Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) The International Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) were established for the information technology, at a time when India was going through a phase of unprecedented boom in the software industry (Years 1998 - 2000). The establishment of International Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) also introduced private players in to the education sector.
Unlike National Institutes of Technology (NITs), not all International Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) are government run, few of them are also run by private bodies and few of them are established by the Public Private Partnership.
* IIIT Gwalior was established by Government of India and was recently rechristened Atal Behari Vajpayee IIITM Gwalior.
* IIIT Bangalore was part of the IT Policy of the Government of Karnataka (the first for any State government). IIIT-Bangalore created a unique model of focusing on graduate studies (Master's and Doctoral programs)
* IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore follow a Public Private Partnership model with significantly larger participation from industry
* IIIT Allahabad was started by Ministry of Human Resource Development (Govt. of India) .
* IIIT Calcutta established in 2000 by Govt of West Bengal has been renamed to SIT (School of Information Technology) and has been made the Information Technology Department of WBUT(West Bengal University of Technology-Kolkata) in the year 2004.
* IIIT Bhubaneswar has been established in 2007 The Management of the institute is in the hands of a Governing Board, consisting of representatives from the Government of Orissa, Leaders from the IT industry and eminent educationists
* IIIT Pune is totally private run. |
