I beg to differ...

I think you should concentrate on speed/accuracy first, make sure you have AIEEE BITSAT in the bag.. and THEN move on to JEE level preparation. i have many friends with IIT ranks of 3000 and AIEEE ranks of 20,000... AIEEE and BITSAT open up a lot more chances.. apart from that its really hard to get a good branch at IIT..

IIT JEE is a different ballgame compared to AIEEE BITSAT etc.. the latter needs different kind of preparation too.. do not make the mistake of thinking that JEE prepn > AIEEE prepn (by prepn i dont mean just studies, i mean exam strategy and other paraphernalia)

Do the math. IIT JEE is one exam which is really hard. There are around 4 other exams for entrance into good colleges which can be easily cracked with decent speed and strategy. Preparing for the latter is obviously a safer bet. I'm not saying that you shouldnt prepare for JEE, im saying you should first ace AIEEE level first and then move on to JEE (by level i dont mean the question level, i mean solving the exam to get a good score, this includes time management and the art of leaving questions) Exam strategy is as important as your hardwork.

I've noticed one thing. Coaching instt's teach you lots of complex stuff. Well, frankly speaking, unless youre a real pro, you will not be able to solve that complex stuff during the exam primarily due to exam stress. Why not spend that time on studying stuff like errors, biomolecules instead? During the exam, instead of pondering over how to solve that hard exam, why not focus on solving other easy stuff? All that matters in the end is your score, not how you get it (isnt it obvious that solving 5 easy questions in 5 mins is better than 1 hard question in 5 mins?). If you're thru with the course at a basic level, you can easily crack AIEEE and the likes with a decent strategy. The key is to solve questions you know correctly, and NOT WASTE ANY TIME on questions you dont know/questions u find hard. In exams like DCE, 3/4th of the people dont even get to look at all the 180 questions just because they got stuck on some stupid hard question they thought they COULD solve. I left around 15 hard questions in DCE this year and found that 20 VERY VERY easy questions followed those 15 questions. As a result, i was able to solve around 140-150 questions, and i am expecting a score of 440+, which is good..

The key is to NOT NOT NOT NOT waste time on any question, and keep moving on, so what if you couldnt crack 5 hard questions? there are 20 easy questions waiting for you (only if you leave those 5 hard questions). First solve all the easy questions you know! Most probably, even if you solve the easy stuff correctly, you will get a great rank!

I messed my AIEEE up REALLY badly (i got a rank of 36000 after dropping, i am not that bad people, i got 297 in BITSAT, was expecting 180-200 marks in JEE, am expecting 440-475 marks in DCE). I didn't take JEE seriously, because i know i dont have it in me to get a top 1000 rank (neither did i work hard enough), and i wanna pursue CS or Elec only... JEE takes a lot more hardwork, dedication, but ill reiterate, i know loads of people with 3000 4000 ranks in JEE and abysmal BITSAT and AIEEE scores because they got stuck solving hard questions.... those who want IIT for the tag are happy, but those who wanted a good branch are really depressed.. they are in no mans land..

I blanked out at the day of AIEEE. Why? I was nervous. I got a score of 143. I knew stuff worth 320 marks in that exam. Even if i had solved 80% of what i knew correctly my score would have been 256, i would have easily been in the top 4000 in the country... so the key word is to maintain your cool all the time. Gulp Red Bull before your exam (it helps). Solve ONLY what you know. Do not waste ANY time on what you dont know. Nervousness/Exam Stress influence your performance MORE than your preparation (assuming you were a bit serious about entrances, i am not talking about people who score in double digits/negative). The no. of students per rank is high, and your composure could determine your future to a large extent.. stay cool.. thats damn imporant For eg, take my case in AIEEE. panicking led to such abysmal performance. Get a good night's sleep.. dont forget the red bull.
Cheers.
