whenever the balance is balanced ..... ie it is in rotational equilibrium... the torque due to the masses on the two pans will be equal.. if we neglect the mass of the pans.. the pan with longer arm will contain less mass than the pan with shorter arm... and so loss or gain depends where the thing to be sold is placed...
now u try to reason out what will happen... loss or gain... if we dont neglect the mass of the pan?? the mass of the balancing rod of the balance??
