In solving this type of problem, there is a four step method. Step no1 Identify the system ( body on which the equn F=ma is to be applied) Step no2 List all the forces acting on the system. Step no3 Draw a free body diagram ( a diagram in which we consider the body under consideration as a point and show all forces by lines in proper direction) Step no4 Finally appply the equn F=ma Now in the given problem let us first take Man as a system. What r the forces acting on man ? 1.The normal force N due to the chair on the man. 2.The weight of the man mg. 3. The force T that the rope exerts on him. Then, T + N - mg = ma -----------(1) Now let us take chair as system. What r the forces acting on the chair ? 1. The force T exerted by the rope on the chair 2. The normal force N exerted by the man on the chair 3. The weight of the chair Mg. The equn is T - N - Mg = Ma ------(2) Solving and substituting the values we get a = 2 m / s2 |
