see fr y= x^2 + 2x+1 dy/dx= 2x+ 2=2(x+1) now since the slope of the tangent on the max nd min of curve is zero (i hope u know it) thus fr max or min dy/dx=0 2x+2=0 x=-1..........this may b min or max now see for x<-1............dy/dx= -ve ie the function is decreasing till x=-1 nd fr x>-1..........dy/dx= +ve ie the fnc is increasing fr x>-1 thus we see fnc at x=-1 moves frm dec 2 inc hence conclude tht at x=-1 there is a minima similarly........if fr ne x= k fn is inc bfore k nd dec after k then its maxima at k hope u got it....else knock back
