Multiple Choice Question Based on Passage
Thermoelectricity
In 1826 Seebeck discovered that if a circuit is composed of two dissimilar metals and the junctions of these metals are maintained at different temperatures, an emf is set up in the circuit. Consequently, a current flows in the circuit. The current flowing in the circuit is called thermoelectric current and the emf that drives the current is called thermoelectric emf or simply thermo emf. The pair of dissimilar metals joined at their ends constitutes a thermocouple. The conversion of heat energy directly into electrical energy when the junctions of two dissimilar metals are maintained at different temperatures is known as the Seebeck effect. Experiments show that the thermo emf E is given by
.....(1)
where t is temperature difference between the hot and the cold junctions and a and b are called seebeck coefficients.
What is the SI unit of b/a?
(a) volt per kelvin
(b) volt kelvin
(c) kelvin
(d) no unit, as b/a is dimensionless
