Its a mistake. Short and Sweet. Those who take a drop are under the misguided notion that IIT is the only way to success. THIS IS UNTRUE. BITS-Pilani as well as NITs such as Surathkal, Trichy, Warangal etc. are all doing well. Not as well as any IIT, of course, but still rather well. Use your AIEEE or BITSAT score instead of risking a year for IIT.

IIT aspirants will now get to see their evaluated JEE answer scripts even before the result is declared on May 18. IIT Delhi, which organised JEE on April 8 this year, has decided to upload the checked optical response sheets of every candidate on the JEE website to maintain transparency and avoid any errors.
